2003 Work in Progress
April-May 2003
Want curb appeal? You've got it! This fabulous wall and steps has transformed a basic, lovely split-level home into a Frank Lloyd Wright-style masterpiece! This is functional art at it's very best!
Don't worry, Gizmo (the pooch checking things out from behind the glass door), John knows what he's doing. If you want a transformation, you gotta break some new ground! (a man, a plan, a canal....) Boys simply never outgrow playing with trucks - they just get bigger and better ones!
Get busy! Hack out some roots there! Clear away some rubble! I'm sure John's paying you at least minimum wage for this!
Dig, dig, dig, mix, mix, mix, pour, pour, pour...."and now, children, it's time to put away the sand box toys and play with building blocks." And you thought you weren't learning any useful skills in kindergarten!
Ten pound building blocks! And they've got to be level and plumb and square. And forming concrete requires complete carpentry skills - done in reverse!
What do ya think, Gizmo? Lookin' pretty fine, huh?
Brick-walled, concrete-filled side landing has a striking appearance; steps are similar construction, but with limestone treads.
Gizmo wags his tail in approval..."Nice work, guys!"
Ain't it just amazing what you can do with a few thousand bricks and a hundred feet of stone? John was customer of the month at Boychuk's (the stone guy on 22). What I want to know is how in heaven did John line up those two square columns? Or lay those vertical bricks on the curved corner (see left). He makes it look easy, but I know better!
This takes my breath away!
And this looks like it could be the garden grounds of an arboretum - such perfect harmony with the landscape!
Entranceway to the exclusive Crest Club, perhaps?
What a spectacular job! This could be on exhibit at MOMA. It's so unique and fun and alive! It's a feat of engineering and design genius. John's my hero!
